SSDT Truly A Family Affair
The Scottish Six Days Trial has always been a family affair with multiple generations of riders from the same families riding over the hundred-plus year history of the event, but this year we have what we believe to be a first. Competing in the 2018 SSDT we have not one father and daughter riding, but two fathers both accompanying their daughters over the six days.
Our first pairing are Dennis and Kylee Sweeten from Oregon in the USA. Dennis is known to many as a regular competitor in Scotland with this being his tenth SSDT. Kylee made her debut last year, along with her brother Zachary which was, we believe, another first for the Trial with father, son and daughter all riding together. Zachary isn’t with us this year, but Kylee, a very enthusiastic Trials rider is back for her second battle with the terrain of the Highlands.
Our second father and daughter combination come in the form of Roger and Kate Callaghan from Ireland. Another enthusiastic Trials rider, Kate who has represented her country in the Woman’s Trial des Nations, turned 21 back in February. When asked what she wanted for her 21st birthday, the answer was simple – she wanted to ride the Scottish Six Days Trial! Naturally dad, Roger couldn’t let her ride alone, so he too is competing this year - 33 years after his last attempt which, coincidentally was when he was also aged 21.
We wish all four the best of luck for the week. Dennis and Kylee are riding numbers 201 and 202 with Roger and Kate having numbers 70 and 71 so feel free to give them some encouragement if you see them!
